The internet is an amazing tool, for collaboration, social networking, research, and for business. The opportunities to make money online are virtually endless – but to get started takes patience and a willingness to learn new skills. If you think you’re ready to start making money online, read on and you’ll discover a few tips that will help you get started.
Before you learn anything about making money online, understand that none of it will matter unless you take action. The best way to guarantee failure is to sit back and dream without putting in the work. Too many would-be millionaires just lack the work ethic needed to motivate themselves into action. However, with sustained focus and effort, will you succeed beyond your wildest dreams.
It Takes Work
Okay, if you’re motivated to put in the effort, let’s also put aside some misconceptions that you may have heard or read. These falsehoods are like rampant fire in the online world, so let’s just extinguish them right up front:
- Making Money Online Is Easy! First, making money online is NOT easy. To be blunt, it’s nowhere near easy, and you’ll have to put in hours of work and most likely a lot of frustration with trial and error before you become successful with whatever avenue of generating revenue that you choose. The most important thing to remember is that you’re learning a new skill, just like learning how to drive or how to play the guitar. As with anything, learning how to make money online takes time and effort – there are no shortcuts and there’s no getting rich quick.
- No Investment Needed! Secondly, if you choose to do anything that involves buying online ads, you’re going to have to have some cash put aside to invest in your new business. This isn’t to say you’re going to need thousands of dollars, but learning how to create ads that convince users to click on them and convert into customers isn’t going to be free. Generally you can get credits that allow you to get started with the major advertisers, which will take a bit of the sting out of it, but prepare to spend a bit of money to get things going.
- Magic Pill Syndrome Finally, be on alert for scams – especially those that revolve around “making money from home” and similar kinds of ad copy. No one product is going to turn you into an online millionaire overnight. Knowledge is free, if you spend the time to research, and you really can learn how to make money online through reading blogs such as this one, forums, and through trial and error. As a general rule, I do not recommend you pay for courses that make outlandish promises. And do not sign up for courses that cost thousands of dollars, regardless of their promises to teach you how to make money online. However there are some proven systems that can get you up and running with minimum effort, teach you the bare essentials, and map out some of the common pitfalls to avoid. Yes, it’s possible to start making money through Google in no time. But it can take a lot longer if you’re just flailing about with no clear direction. Bottom line: do some research before diving in.
It Takes Time
Now that you’ve got a watchful eye for things, you’re ready to get started. You’ll need to decide whether or not you want to approach making money online on a part-time or full-time basis. The benefit of doing things part-time is that you can learn while you’ve got another source of income, which means you don’t have to have a large nest egg you can live off of while you get your income ramped up. The downside to part-timing is that it will take you a bit longer and you might not be as motivated to get things up to speed quickly.

Google’s AdSense program has been around since the search giant started selling advertising. AdSense allows website owners, bloggers and others the chance to earn a commission by listing Google’s ads on their website properties. Google then pays out these commissions on a monthly basis, as soon as a certain base level has been reached.
The primary way you make money with AdSense is by building websites and placing AdSense ads on them. AdSense offers a number of different ad sizes, including large and small banners, text ad blocks in various sizes and more. Modern content management systems such as WordPress come with thousands of available themes that have AdSense built in, so that little design or coding knowledge is required to start running ads. Anyone who’s spent some time browsing on the web has come across AdSense ads and with billions per year being paid out to Google’s affiliates, it’s clear they haven’t been shy about clicking on them. Before you design your next website, you might want to consider how you’re going to incorporate AdSense.
If you’re a blogger, or you’ve thought of starting a blog, you’d be silly to skip including AdSense ads on your site. Ads on blogs are commonplace and typically do not annoy readers if placed in non-intrusive areas. Try sticking a few ad blocks in different locations on your blog to see where the clicks are generated and if any users complain. If you have a large amount of traffic on your blog, you will see revenue generated through AdSense almost immediately. Google is fantastic at ensuring that their ads show in the correct context, meaning if your blog is about owning a dog, ads for dog-related products will show up. This contextual advertising is actually helpful for readers that are in the market to make a purchase, and clicks will increase. …continue reading Making Money with Google AdSense
Since the introduction of the weblog in the early 2000s as a form of an online diary, blogging has exploded to become one of the primary forms that content is produced online. Many of the highest-trafficked websites on the internet are blogs, making millions of dollars per year and employing dozens of writers. With some time invested into it each day, your blog can turn into a revenue-generating machine that requires little effort to maintain.
A couple of important things to keep in mind if you plan on making decent money online with your blog are its appearance and the importance of maintaining your readership. It’s no secret that websites and blogs that have a fresh and professional design are the ones that are most frequented by users. If your blog looks terrible, your results will be terrible, so if you’re not proficient at web design it’s best to outsource this to someone who is. In regards to readership, there are a couple of tips to follow. First, it’s important to post frequently – at least once a day. This keeps your blog front and centre for your subscribers and also keeps the search engines coming back to index your new content. Second, you’ll want to keep your writing succinct. Many blogs cap their posts at around 300-400 words total – the longer the post, the more opportunity you have to lose the reader. Check out some of the major blogs in your target niche to see how long their posts are, and keep to a similar length.

Auction giant eBay continues to be a fantastic place for individuals to make money online. Whether you look at eBay selling as a part-time gig to bring in some extra cash or a full-time business that provides your total income, selling on eBay can be lucrative once it’s mastered. Below are just a few of the ways that one can make money online with eBay.
The easiest way to generate income through eBay is by selling things you already own and want to get rid of, or by selling things that you make as a hobby or business. As the saying goes, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” so when you’re ready for a spring cleaning or a hunt through the attic, keep eBay in mind. That old stamp, baseball card or other collection may be worth a small fortune to a collector. Part-timers on eBay also make great use of garage sales and other junk-hunting opportunities – check out local garage sales and flea markets for items that will sell well, and pick them up for cheap.
If you’re thinking of making eBay a full-time business, drop shipping is a fantastic way to go. By doing a little research online one can find drop shippers for every different type of product that you might want to sell on eBay. Working with drop shippers is easy; once the buyer has paid you for the product you sold, you forward their shipping details to the drop shipper who fulfills the order. Depending on the price of the item and how high you set your margin, you can make a decent amount on every sale without having to handle any of the shipping.
